What is meant by
Basic Foods?
Basic foods refer to foods that are present in the food
pyramid. These are foods that contain vitamins and minerals and other nutrients needed by the
body. There are 4 groups of food in the diet such as the dairy
group, grain group, meat group and the fruits and vegetables group of diet – foods that are essential for the
body.
How do these basic
food groups classified?
Foods are grouped according to the similarities of the
healthy nutrient properties it contains such as:
1. Dairy
Group. These foods include low-fat milk, fat-free or low fat
buttermilk, low fat cheese and regular low-fat yogurt drinks. For adult’s daily consumption of dairy products,
three cups are recommended.
2. Grains
Group. It refers to food made from whole wheat such as bread and rolls, pastries, pasta, muffin, cereals,
brown rice, oatmeal, popcorn, unsalted pretzels, and other high-protein grains.
3. Meat
Group.. Most parts of the animals are edible but let’s focus on the major sources of protein, iron, and
vitamin B12. This can be found in meat and, poultry products such as chicken, beef, pork, eggs, and sea foods
like fish, shrimps and others.
4. Fruits and
vegetables or the alkaline forming food groups. Fruits like apple, banana, dates, grapes, kale,
strawberries, pineapples, peaches, and other fruit juices containing antioxidant properties. Vegetables include
broccoli, carrots, green beans, collards, tomatoes, tomatoes, spinach, squash and other green leafy vegetables
that are very essential and helpful for a healthy lifestyle.
How much or which
of each of the food group is needed by the body?
Some groups focus on fruits and vegetables, whole grains
and low-fat milk or milk products in your diet. If you choose the lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, nuts and
eggs, they all contain nutrients that are good for the health. As long as it meets the needed calories for your
daily bodily nutrients all of these are beneficial to your health.
Some foods have an additional sugars and fats. Though
these basic food categories are helpful in your diet, you still have to visit your health care provider or
nutritionist for you to know which among the lists of basic foods is best for you. Depending on the body type or
present health conditions, food requirements might be different from one person to another. For people who are
very lean and wants to gain some weight, foods rich in protein and essential oils would be best. Conversely,
those who want to cut some weight might want to try fruit and vegetable diet.
